Investment Approach

CONTROL THE CONTROLLABLES
Derek Redmond, Olympian, was famously helped around the track by his father after pulling a hamstring in the final of the 1992 Olympic 400x relay.

This moment was later referenced by Barack Obama in a famous speech celebrating bravery and tenacity. Today, Derek is a business performance coach who emphasises the importance of focusing on what can be controlled. In athletics, this meant prioritising diet, sleep, and training rather than fixating on the uncontrollable outcome of winning a medal. By managing the controllables, athletes improve their chances of success.

The same principles apply to investment management. While world events remain beyond anyone’s control, thorough due diligence on stocks, managers, or sectors, along with thoughtful asset diversification, allows for better risk management. Executed effectively, this approach increases the likelihood of achieving favourable outcomes.

CONTROL
We know what delivers for our clients and focus exclusively on that.

Most developed equity and debt markets are relatively efficient which means it is unlikely that active management can add value. Some markets and some elements of developed markets are not efficient and the higher costs of accessing these areas and skills are justified.

Modern portfolio construction is increasingly about combining the best of passive and active funds in this dynamic way. We take a pragmatic and objective approach to construct multi-asset portfolios that deliver the investment returns our clients desire.

One of the attributes of the most successful long term investors is that they know the impact on their returns of excessive costs. Our clients work hard and make sacrifices to build up their savings. We respect this and work tirelessly to eliminate costs and waste from our investment portfolios to maximise long term returns. If costly active funds are not justifying their fees then we will shift to passive for example.
